Scoil Mhuire – ‘Primary Plastic Reducers’ Need Your Help

We here at Scoil Mhuire have recently entered the  SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland) ‘One Good Idea’ Competition and we have been lucky enough to be one of the forty schools, out of hundreds from all over Ireland, who have been chosen to take part in the next stage. Our ‘One Good Idea’ is to reduce plastic in our school and our local community.  We have set up a team to help with this task, namely ‘The Primary Plastic Reducers’.

We came up with this idea as we have noticed how much plastic we are using in our school especially in our lunchboxes. We have read many articles and watched many videos and we know that it is now our responsibility to make some changes. We understand that climate change is a major issue and that we need to drastically reduce our energy consumption. We hope to do this by reducing plastic as we know energy is used, not only in the creation of plastic, but also when it is being recycled and disposed of.

We will be running a campaign throughout our school to encourage every pupil to try and reduce the amount of plastic in their lunchboxes. We know this problem is not unique to our school so we are encouraging parents and pupils in all schools in Leitrim to use alternatives to help reduce the amount of plastic we are using. Together we can make a difference.

We hope that everybody will get involved and that we can make a positive change, not only here in Scoil Mhuire but throughout our community. Remember small simple changes can make a huge difference!
